On Wednesday, director-actor Selvaraghavan took to his social media handles to tease a sequel to his hit 2006 film Pudhupettai, starring Dhanush in the lead role. He shared a photo of himself and captioned it saying, "Hopefully Pudhupettai 2 should happen this year."

Further details regarding the film are yet to be announced by him. He has also not revealed if Dhanush would be reprising his role as Kokki Kumar in the sequel.

The crime-action film, also starring Sneha and Sonia Agarwal in supporting roles, went on to hold a cult status among movie lovers and fans of Dhanush. The film's popularity also grew far and wide in the Kollywood industry, and his character and dialogues from the film became pop culture references for several movies that came after that.

The film follows Dhanush (Kokki Kumar), a slum-dwelling student from Pudhupettai who rises to become a dreaded gangster in North Chennai to survive.

Meanwhile, Selvaraghavan last directed Naane Varuvean in 2022, starring his brother Dhanush in dual roles. In 2023, he acted in Bakasuran, Farhana and Mark Antony in prominent roles.
