Kamal Haasan's Indian, the 1996 vigilante film directed by Shankar, marked the 27-year milestone on Tuesday. 

It may be noted that the film featured Kamal in dual roles--Indian freedom fighter turned vigilante, Senapathy and Chandru, Senapathy’s son and vehicle inspector. 

Backed by M Rathnam under Sri Surya Movies Entertainment, Indian was billed as the most expensive film of that time. The film also featured Manisha Koirala, Nedumudi Venu, Crazy Mohan, Senthil and Goundamani. 
It had music by AR Rahaman. Indian won three National Film Awards-- Kamal for Best Actor, Thota Tharani for Best Art Direction and ST Venky for Best Special Effects.

Meanwhile, the much-awaited sequel, Indian 2, is under production. It is also directed by Shankar. It is co-produced by Lyca Productions in association with Red Giant Movies. The upcoming film also features Rakul Preet Singh, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Siddharth, Guru Somasundaram, and Bobby Simha in prominent roles. The film has music composed by Anirudh Ravichander, while Ravi Varman is the cinematographer.
