Varalaxmi Sarathkumar: I want to play an innocent yet funny character

Varalaxmi Sarathkumar is an actor who is largely associated with negative characters. In her upcoming film Kondraal Paavam too, she is playing a character oozing villainy. Ahead of the film's release on Friday, the actor opens up about the abundance of negative roles she has been doing and the kind of roles she wishes to do in the future.

"I am not consciously choosing to do negative characters. I guess people visualise me in grey roles more than in other characters. There is a void when it comes to women who are willing to do negative roles. I decided to capitalise on something where there is a dearth, rather than being one among the many 'mass' heroines," says Varalaxmi, adding, "I pick roles that excite me and challenge me alike."

When asked if the monotony of essaying negative roles gets to her, Varalaxmi says, "Although every single negative character I have played so far is different from one another, it bores me sometimes to play these roles. I never get to smile in these films, unless in an evil way."

Although she is good at doing grey characters, Varalaxmi also wants to break the chain. "I want to do a film in which I play an innocent yet funny character. It would be refreshing to portray such a character," she shares.

On the work front, Varalaxmi has been paddling between the Telugu and Tamil film industries. Her upcoming films, Hanu Man and Sabari in Telugu, Pamban and Piranthal Parasakthi in Tamil, and Lagaam in Kannada are in different stages of production.
