Veteran actor Vijayakanth, who was fondly called Captain, died on Thursday, leaving the film fraternity with an irreparable void. Many from the film and political fraternity condoled the death.
Speaking to CE, actor Devayani who has worked with Vijayakanth in the 2000 action film Vallarasu, said, “I am not in Chennai, but it was the first thing I heard when I got up today, It is definitely a grim day for all of us. Vijayakanth sir is a legendary actor and above all, he is a great technician by all means. He is the sum total of being a true artist. And a great leader and above all, he is a simple man.”
“I have acted in Vallarasu, which is backed by his production and also in Sagaptham, which starred his son. Sir also made a cameo appearance, if I am not wrong in his last onscreen role. I remember him the most by his punctuality and hardworking nature. Despite all his achievements, he is simple and grounded. I only pray for courage to face these tough times, to his family and scores of fans,” she added.
Vijayakanth was born on August 25, 1952, and predominantly worked in Tamil films. He also served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2016 and was the president of the political party Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam.
He is known for films such as Doorathu Idi Muzhakkam, Satham Oru Iruttuarai, Amman Kovil Kizhakale, Oomai Vizhigal, Captain Prabhakaran, Chinna Gounder, Ramanaa and Engal Anna. The actor was last seen making a cameo appearance in the 2015 film Sagaptham.
Vijayakanth died at the age of 71.
