Fifty days since the release of Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan 1, the blockbuster backed by Lyca Productions has breached the Rs 500 crore mark globally. This is just the second Tamil film after Rajinikanth-Shankar's 2.0 to achieve this feat. Incidentally, 2.0 was also made under the Lyca Productions banner.

A historical saga, based on the famous novel of the same name by Kalki, Ponniyin Selvan 1 chronicles the Chola period. Starring a galaxy of big-ticket actors like Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, Karthi, Trisha, Jayam Ravi, and Jayaram among others, the film was lapped up by the audiences, who came in droves to watch the film even after its OTT release on Amazon Prime Video.

Apart from Ponniyin Selvan 1 and 2.0, the illustrious list of South Indian films to enter the Rs 500 crore club include the two Baahubali films, RRR, and KGF 2.

With Mani Ratnam having already shot both parts of this franchise, Ponniyin Selvan 2 is expected to hit the screens on April 28. 2023. After that project, the filmmaker is set to reunite with his Nayagan actor Kamal Haasan for a project tentatively called as KH 234.
