Even as a section of the audience criticise its dialogues and casting choices, Christopher Nolan's latest film, The Odyssey, has set multiple box office records. It has already become the highest-grossing Christopher Nolan film in terms of the opening weekend collection both at the global box office and in India. According to reports, the film has earned more than $264 million from theatres worldwide. Reportedly, it has surpassed the previous opening weekend record holders from Nolan's filmography, including The Dark Knight Rises ($249 million) and Oppenheimer ($180 million).
Reports reveal that The Odyssey has earned more than 70 crore from theatres in India, marking the highest-grosser for the first weekend collection for a Nolan directorial venture in India.
Reportedly, it opened in theatres across the country to a gross collection of 20 crore, the highest for a Nolan film. It has also had the biggest opening for any film released in India in terms of IMAX box office collection.
Speaking about the film's box office performance, Denzil Dias, Vice President and Managing Director, India Theatrical, Warner Bros Discovery, stated, "The Odyssey delivered Christopher Nolan's biggest ever opening weekend in India, with round-the-clock shows through the weekend and an all-time IMAX opening day and opening weekend records, for IMAX. Some films make it easy to choose the cinema. The Odyssey made it impossible to choose anything else. This weekend, India agreed and showed up. In every language and format available to it."
Based on Homer's eponymous poem, it is billed as the first major film to be shot entirely with IMAX cameras. It chronicles the titular King of Ithaca's (Matt Damon) perilous journey back home after the Trojan War. On his way back, he encounters giant waves, monsters, and other creatures, making him and his crew reflect on the horrors of the war they waged in Troy.
