Kamal Haasan is in Delhi to promote his upcoming film Vikram. Speaking in a press meet in the capital, the Tamil actor spoke about the new trend of pan-Indian films and the north vs south debate.
Kamal Haasan told PTI, "When you pan for gold, you pan for new words, coinages. Pan India (films) have always been there.” He further added, "Shantaram ji did pan India films. 'Padosan' is a pan India film. Mehmood ji almost spoke Tamil in the film. What do you call 'Mughal-e-Azam'? It's a pan India film for me. It's nothing new. Our country is unique. Unlike America, we speak different languages but we are united. That's the beauty of this country.”
When asked about the ongoing North vs South debate concerning cinema after the success of RRR and KGF, Kamal said everything is the same to him as he considers himself to be an Indian. He said, "I am an Indian. What are you? Taj Mahal is mine, Madurai temple is yours. Kanyakumari is as much yours as Kashmir is mine.”
Kamal has been missing from action for the past four years. He was last seen in Vishwaroopam 2, which turned out to be a poor performer at the box office. The actor was also busy with his political journey. Vikram will mark his return to the silver screen. Directed by Lokesh Kanagarj of Kaithi fame, the film is partially inspired by Kamal's 1986 film of the same name.
Vikram also features Fahadh Faasil, Vijay Sethupathi, and Narain in prominent roles. The film will be released on June 3.
