Indian science fiction films are closely linked to creative ideas about technology and often lack emotional depth. However, director Vikram Kumar's 24, starring Suriya, works on both creative and emotional levels. Led by an exceptional Suriya in a triple role, the film is not just a time travel thriller; beneath its fantasy elements exists love, sacrifice, and the painful awareness that time can never truly be controlled.
The film’s greatest achievement lies in the way it humanises science fiction. Instead of allowing the time-controlling concept to dominate, the story focuses on people and relationships. The emotional approach is precisely why the genre becomes fascinating in films like 24. In this film, technology and invention are not the heart of the story but human vulnerability is.
One of the most remarkable things about the film is the way it combines elements of fantasy, thriller, romance, and tragedy so seamlessly. The relationship between Sethuraman (Suriya) and his son, Mani (Suriya), drives the narrative. The story's emotion comes from a father sacrificing everything to keep his child alive. It explores love in a subtle way.
Another emotional layer was added through Mani’s (Suriya) foster mother (Saranya Ponvannan). Although they do not share a biological relationship, motherhood is expressed through care, sacrifice and emotional responsibility. Her willingness to raise Mani gives the film a sense of warmth. Through this character, the film shows that family is built on love and compassion by giving up personal comforts.
Fear is the other major emotional theme throughout the film. All the characters are defined by some kind of fear, especially Athreya (Suriya). His obsession with controlling time is deeply connected to mortality. Ageing and death terrify him. Through the character, the film conveys how fear can consume humanity when left unchecked. In the film, loud aggression is not relied upon to create menace but rather emotional emptiness and obsession.
The triple role played by Suriya elevates the emotional impact of the film. Sethuraman carries gentleness and maturity, Mani has innocence and warmth, and Athreya is bitter and fearful. Each character appears emotionally distinct, allowing one to experience the story through different perspectives.
The love between Mani and Sathya (Samantha Ruth Prabhu) brings emotional balance into the narrative. It adds softness as their love story has innocence in it. Their love shows that amidst chaos, moments of affection and companionship matter deeply.
Unfortunately, 24 did not achieve the level of theatrical success expected in Tamil Nadu during its release. Arguably, the film was ahead of its time. However, viewers in many other states appreciated the film. The film achieved cult status because audiences deeply connected with its themes of love, sacrifice and fear.
