GV Prakash Kumar has opened up about his experience of scoring music for Gladiators, the upcoming documentary that chronicles Ajith Kumar’s journey as a professional racecar driver. Directed by AL Vijay, the film is being presented by Ajith Kumar Sports Services LLC and produced by Shalini Ajithkumar under Golden Trophy Film Production. GV Prakash, who also scored Ajith’s Good Bad Ugly, is composing the music for the documentary.
Speaking to Behindwoods while promoting his upcoming film Immortal, GV Prakash recalled receiving an unexpected call from Ajith while work was underway on Gladiators. According to the composer, the call came through the BOTIM app at around 1 am, with Ajith personally appreciating the music he had heard from the project.
“He said, ‘GV, I am very thankful. I really liked the trailer music and the film's music. You've all come together and worked so passionately on this. I will make you proud,’” GV Prakash recalled. The composer said the actor’s words left him deeply motivated, to the extent that he could not sleep after the conversation.
For GV Prakash, however, the documentary carries a significance beyond simply being another Ajith project. He described Gladiators as a new experience because the film documents an important phase of the actor’s life, making the music an added responsibility. “I feel emotional to be a part of this project,” he said.
Elaborating on what makes the documentary different, GV Prakash said the focus is ultimately Ajith himself rather than racing alone. “The real film is not about a film; it is about him,” he said, adding that the documentary captures what Ajith thinks about his racing journey and how he hopes to take it to an international level. He also pointed out that Ajith is investing his own money into the endeavour, making the documentation of this chapter particularly important. According to GV Prakash, it is a record that could “stand the test of time".
Gladiators has been in the works for several months and is directed by Vijay, who has previously collaborated with GV Prakash on Deivathirumagal and Madrasapattinam. The documentary follows Ajith and his racing team through the challenges and achievements of international motorsport, including their participation in endurance racing events. The film was initially expected to arrive around Ajith’s birthday but its release plans changed. The makers have now confirmed a theatrical release, while its trailer has recently received a UA 13+ certification.
Meanwhile, GV Prakash is gearing up for the release of Immortal, his upcoming fantasy thriller directed by Mariyappan Chinna. Starring GV Prakash and Kayadu Lohar, the film revolves around a young man whose fascination with his neighbour takes an unsettling turn when a monster begins haunting him. The film, produced by Arunkumar Dhanasekaran under AK Film Factory, is scheduled to hit theatres on September 4.
