Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar passed away at a private hospital in Mumbai. The Nightingale of India was 92. She tested positive for Covid-19 a few weeks ago. Despite showing signs of recovery, the singer breathed her last in Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on January 8.

Lata Mangeshkar, the recipient of India's highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna, leaves behind a prolific legacy and a gaping void. People from all walks of life have expressed their condolences on social media.

Though she has sung only a handful of songs in Dravidian languages, the Queen of Melody still won many hearts down South. And as musician AR Rahman pointed out in his statement after her death, Lata Ji is part of the Indian consciousness and Indianess.
