Body-shaming is not new to our entertainment industry. In the garb of humour, it has been a staple of our films right from the days of Goundamani and Senthil. But two VJs probably took it too far, inviting the wrath of fans and social-media users, when they decided to take potshots at actor Suriya's physical appearance.

VJs Sangeetha and Niveditha, while discussing Suriya and KV Anand's upcoming film on their show titled Franka Sollatta, joked about Suriya needing a stool, if Amitabh Bachhan were to do a cameo in his film.

Their comments have since then been slammed by many on different social media platforms, including people from the industry. Some unconfirmed reports hint at a legal notice, which has been sent to the channel from the actor's side for making such comments.

Popular personalities who have expressed their outrage at the VJs' comments, include Vishal, the general secretary of the Nadigar Sangam and president of the Producers' Council, critic and producer Dhananjayan, actor Karunakaran, and Vignesh Shivn, the director of Suriya's latest film, Thaanaa Serndha Koottam.

Many pointed out the irony of such body-shaming having been made socially acceptable by the film industry in the first place. Meanwhile, the VJs have been the target of abusive and misogynistic tweets, with some threatening them with violence.

In a recent development, actor Suriya reacting to this outrage tweeted requesting his fans  not to engage in crass trolls, and to use their times productively instead.
