Earlier, we had reported that Mari Selvaraj's Karnan, starring Dhanush, was met with legal hurdles after a Madurai-resident filed a welfare petition against the song Pandarathi Puranam in Madurai High court.

Following the controversy, on Thursday, Mari Selvaraj took to Twitter to announce that the song's name will be changed to Manjanathi Puranam.

The filmmaker thanked the audience for the wide positive response that the songs and teaser of Karnan have been receiving, before talking about the controversy.

"I thank you all for supporting Karnan, right from when the shoot began. The love you all show towards me has also taught me to make films with at most responsibility. Pandarathi Puranam was also created with the respect for the values of people. Pandarathis are all angels in my life, like my sister, my aunt, my grandmother, etc, and my screenplay revolves around the stories of these Pandarathis. However, I do understand that considering the psychology of an oppression-ridden society like ours, the impact certain names/words create is unimaginable. I have decided to put a full stop to the debates and issues revolving around Pandarathi Puranam. We have decided to call Pandarathi Puranam as Manjanathi Puranam. We have made the changes in our film and it will take some time to reflect in the digital space online," read the statement from the filmmaker.

Meanwhile, the much-awaited teaser of Karnan was released on Tuesday and has garnered over seven million views so far. Bankrolled by V Creations, the film also stars Lal, Yogi Babu, Rajisha Vijayan, and Nataraj in prominent roles, and is set to release in cinemas on April 9.
