Filmmaker Selvaraghavan has apologised for agreeing with a line of thinking that drew a comparison of the lead character Ramaswamy (Ramsay) of his recent film Nenjam Marappathillai to political leader Periyar EV Ramasamy.

The director, in a post-release interview, was questioned whether he 'intentionally pitched God against Ramaswamy' in the film. After a few seconds pause, he was seen nodding in approval of the statement. This gesture of the creator attracted condemnation across social media yesterday as SJ Suryah's Ramsay is portrayed as the highest form of evil in the film.

Following the furore, Selvaraghavan posted a Tweet today on his official handle apologising for the confusion and clarifying that he did not comprehend the question at the time. He wrote, "Dear friends! I did not understand the question he asked me in that interview. It's only after you pointed it out to me, that I understood the context. I should have been more careful. Apologies."
 

Nenjam Marappathillai, co-starring Regina Cassandra and Nandita Swetha, was released on March 5, after a long wait of five years. Though the film has been lauded for its outlandish execution, it has been receiving polarizing reviews.
