The much-anticipated sequel to DCEU's Aquaman, titled Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, has finally commenced shooting after the COVID-19 lockdown.
Director James Wan confirmed the development on social media by posting a photo of a clapboard from the sets. "Day One. #aquaman2," he wrote as the caption.
Lead actor Jason Mamoa, who is returning to play the titular superhero role, had earlier revealed that the team will be shooting in Hawaii this month. Mamoa was last seen as Aquaman in Zack Snyder's Justice League.
Notably, it may be recalled that director Wan had stated that Aquaman 2 would be more serious than the first film during last year's DC FanDome. “The second one is a little bit more serious, a little bit more relevant to the world we’re living in today. That’s where it wants to go.” The title implies that the film will majorly focus on the water kingdom Atlantis.
The sequel also brings back actors Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, and Yahya Abdul Mateen II. Game of Thrones-fame Pilou Asbæek is the newest addition to the cast. The screenplay is written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who co-wrote the screenplay for the first Aquaman.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is scheduled to hit theatres on December 16, 2022.
