Netflix has acquired Chaitanya Tamhane’s Marathi-language film The Disciple. The film, which has Alfonso Cuarón attached as executive producer, was awarded the FIPRESCI International Critics Prize and the Best Screenplay award at the 77th Venice International Film Festival.

It tells the story of a classical vocalist experiencing a crisis of faith in his craft. The cast features Aditya Modak, Arun Dravid, Sumitra Bhave, Deepika Bhide Bhagwat and Kiran Yadnyopavit.

Chaitanya had previously directed the critically-acclaimed Court in 2014. The film was selected as Indian’s official submission to the Oscars in 2015.

Speaking about his second feature, Chaitanya shared, “The story of The Disciple came from my own search for excellence and direction. It’s about how many of us follow all the rules and yet, sometimes, find that something is missing.”

Executive producer Alfonso Cuarón said, “I believe Chaitanya is one of the most important new voices of contemporary cinema and I’m thrilled The Disciple will be able to be enjoyed by audiences all around the world.”

The Disciple will be released on Netflix soon.
