After the backlash that followed his remarks on #MeToo, Shaktimaan and Mahabharat actor Mukesh Khanna defended his remarks in a statement. The actor took to Twitter to say that his words were "perceived in an extremely wrong way."

Earlier, in a clip from a recent video interview, Mukesh opined that the role of a woman is to take care of the household. “The problem of #MeToo began when women started working. Today, women talk about walking shoulder-to-shoulder with men,” Mukesh was heard telling The Filmy Charcha.

The actor’s statements were roundly criticised on social media and many expressed disappointment with their childhood superhero.

In a series of tweets denying his remarks, Mukesh also said, "I am surprised that my statement has been perceived in an extremely wrong way, and is being looked at in a totally flawed context. The whole thing has been blown out of proportion. It's being said that I am against women."

"If my statement has upset or hurt any woman, then I am really saddened that I haven't been able to put across my thoughts in a more cohesive, correct manner," added Khanna, who is best known for playing the titular character in the Doordarshan's superhero show Shaktimaan.
