CE Features

K Bhagyaraj's yesteryear film, Mundhanai Mudichu is getting a remake, and Sasikumar will be playing the lead. Bhagyaraj will be handling the story, screenplay, and dialogue for the remake which he seems to have completed already. The film will be produced by JSB Sathish under his JSB Film Studios banner.

The makers released a photo showing Bhagyaraj and Sasikumar discussing the film. The director, female lead, and rest of the cast and crew details are expected to be announced soon.

The soundtrack of the original film by Ilaiyaraaja turned out to be a chartbuster, and our source states that the makers are planning to rope in a famous composer to handle the remake's music. The source also adds that the remake rights have been acquired from AVM Productions, which bankrolled the original film, and the remake will most likely be titled the same.

Released in 1983, Mundhanai Mudichu was directed by Bhagyaraj, who also starred as the lead. The film marked the Tamil debut of Urvashi. Hailed as one of the director's biggest hits, the film ran for more than 25 weeks and fetched a Filmfare award for Best Actor – Tamil for the director. The film was also remade in Telugu as Moodu Mullu (1983), in Hindi as Masterji (1985), and in Kannada as Halli Meshtru (1992).

Interestingly, a sequel to Mundhanai Mudichu, titled Mappillai Vinayagar, was shot in 2012 with Lollu Sabha Jeeva playing the lead role of the son of the characters played by Bhagyaraj and Urvashi in the original. But the film failed to get a theatrical release.
