Shakuntala Devi trailer out: Vidya Balan is torn between family and math

CE Features

The trailer for Shakuntala Devi is out. Directed by Anu Menon, the upcoming biopic stars Vidya Balan as mathematician and ‘human computer’ Shakuntala Devi.

The nearly 3-minute trailer captures her journey from a precocious schoolgirl in India to a revered academic in London. “Math has no rules! Only magic,” Shakuntala says, calling the subject her best friend. We also see her solve complex problems backwards and earn a mention in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The mood shifts when we are introduced to Shakuntala’s family — played by Sanya Malhotra and Jisshu Sengupta. We learn that the genius mathematician has been an absent mother, which leads to a clash when her daughter grows up and tries to reunite with her. “Why be normal when I can be amazing?” Shakuntala quips, the trailer flipping back into its jaunty spirit.

Shakuntala Devi is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on July 31. The film also stars Amit Sadh.

Vidya Balan recently turned producer with the short film Natkhat. Her upcoming project is Sherni, directed by Amit V Masurkar.
