A live-action adaptation of Cartoon Network's classic series The Powerpuff Girls is in works at The CW. While the original featured three child superheroes - Blossom, Buttercup and Bubbles, the modern interpretation will feature their adult versions.

Craig McCracken created the original show (1998-2005) with six seasons. The new project is helmed by writers and executive producers Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody. The latter is known for her work in Juno, Jennifer's Body and Young Adult.

The cast and crew details are yet to be revealed as the series is still in the initial stages of development. The plot will revolve around whether the titular superheroes reunite and save the world after losing most of their childhood to fighting crime.

A film adaptation of The Powerpuff Girls was released in 2002 and Cartoon Network rebooted the animated series in 2016.
