Director Kevin Smith, who directed the 1995 Mallrats, has been working on a sequel for the comedy film since 2015. It is now known that the sequel will deal with the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on malls in America.

Smith recently shared that being in self-isolation allowed him to complete the script of the sequel, which has been titled Twilight of the Mallrats

In a podcast, Smith said, "I was working on Twilight of the Mallrats, the Mallrats 2 script, and I had just read articles about the retail apocalypse, where 2020 was going to be the death knell for a bunch of stores anyway. But the pandemic has escalated that, made it worse, and we're about seeing a lot big box stores just go away forever. That means massive vacancies in malls, so they're predicting the implosion, the entire implosion of malls across America."

The 1995 film starred Jason Lee, Jeremy London, Shannen Doherty, Claire Forlani, Ben Affleck and Jason Mewes. Despite a lukewarm response from audience and critics, Mallrats became a cult classic over the years.
