Sony is launching an in-house studio named PlayStation Productions through which films and shows will be made from games. The studio will be headed by Asad Qizilbash and Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios chairman Shawn Layden.

In a recent interview, Layden said, "We feel that now is a good time to look at other media opportunities across streaming or film or television to give our worlds life in another spectrum. You take the ethos you write from there specifically for the film audience."

Starting a new studio is being called 'an unexpected surprise' by fans as the norm is to license out properties to other studios. Sony has so far confirmed a film on the game series Uncharted, as well as one based on The Last of Us
