A new Mortal Kombat film is in the works after more than two decades. Pre-production for the project, which is being planned as a reboot of the video game-turned-film franchise, is set to start this month. The film, which will go on floors in Adelaide, Australia later this year, is touted to be the biggest film production in the state's history.
Aquaman and Fast and Furious 7 director James Wan is producing the film, while Simon McQuoid is making his feature directing debut with it. They have both been attached to the reboot for several years now. McQuoid has some experience with games-related projects, as he directed a fun PS3 advertisement featuring a parade of famous PlayStation characters several years back.
The original 1995 film, Mortal Kombat, was directed by Paul WS Anderson. A sequel titled Mortal Kombat: Annihilation was released in 1997, followed by two television series and two web series as well.
With Minecraft, Detective Pikachu, and Sonic the Hedgehog all getting movie adaptations, the time seems ripe for a Mortal Kombat reboot. More so, given that the games still thriving -- Mortal Kombat 11 arrived just last month -- and the 25th anniversary of the first Mortal Kombat movie is coming up next year.
