Universal Studios backing off from writer-director Rawson Marshall Thurber's Red Notice has ensured the Dwayne Johnson-Gal Gadot-Ryan Reynolds-starrer is set to become Netflix's most expensive commitment. The production cost is expected to be almost $200 million. 

Red Notice, Thurber's follow-up to last year's Skyscraper, was originally slated for a November 2020 release under the Universal Studios, and now with Netflix taking over production, the revised release date of the action thriller is yet to be finalised. 

Revolving around Johnson as an Interpol agent tasked with capturing the most-wanted art thief of the world, Red Notice marks the first collaboration of the actor with the streaming giant. While it was earlier reported that Netflix was cutting down costs for original productions, the stellar star cast of the film seems to have made the think tank at the streaming giant change their mind. Interestingly, this is not the first time Netflix has loosened the pursestrings so far for accommodating high profile original content. A budget of $100 million upwards was spent for Martin Scorcese's The Irishman and the upcoming Ryan Reynolds-Michael Bay film. 

In a statement, Johnson praised Netflix for its "ambition to become one of the biggest movie studios in the world." The former WWE star will next be seen alongside Jason Statham in Hobbs and Shaw, a spinoff the Fast and Furious franchise.
