Twelve years after Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Akshay Kumar is making a comeback to the horror-comedy genre as he teams up with Tamil director Raghava Lawrence for the Hindi remake of the latter's hit Muni franchise. Rather than a direct remake, it is expected to be a combination of the first two films of the franchise - Muni (2007) and Muni 2: Kanchana (2011). Both films were directed by Lawrence, who had also starred as the cowardly protagonist who gets possessed by vengeful ghosts.
The blockbuster franchise had a successful third instalment, Kanchana 2 (2015) and is gearing up for its fourth film, Kanchana 3, which is slated for release on April 18.
While an official announcement is awaited from the makers of the Hindi film, the yet-to-be-titled adaptation is expected to go floors in April this year and get a release in 2020.
Incidentally, Amar Kaushik’s horror comedy film Stree — starring Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor and Pankaj Tripathi in the lead roles — was a massive box-office success last year.
