Veteran playback singer Mohammed Aziz passed away today, aged 64, at Mumbai's Nanavati Hospital. The celebrated vocalist had just returned from a show in Kolkata and was being driven back from the Mumbai airport when he started complaining of discomfort and was taken to the hospital, where he was declared dead due to a heart attack.
Born in 1954 in Kolkata, Mohammed Aziz made his singing debut in the Bengali film, Jyoti. He subsequently became a popular singer in Bengali, Hindi, and Odia film industries, delivering popular hits of the 80’s and early 90’s. His most memorable Hindi songs include My Name Is lakhan, Aap Ke Aa Jane Se, Lal Dupatta Malmal Ka, and Dil Le Gayi Teri Bindiya.
He had provided vocals for multiple generations of Bollywood stars, from Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan to Mithun Chakraborty and Govinda. Mohammed was known for his close association with Laxmikant-Pyarelal as well as Kalyanji-Anandji, RD Burman, Naushad, OP Nayyar, and Bappi Lahiri.
His mortal remains will be carried to Kandivali West residence tonight. The funeral is likely to take place tomorrow.
