Director Pa Ranjith is all set to make a web series on the life of yesteryear actor Silk Smitha, who ruled the roost in the 1980s.

The filmmaker, who is known for his socially-conscious films and dignified portrayal of female leads, can be expected to look past the ‘sex siren’ image of Smitha. According to sources, the series is said to explore various aspects of Silk Smitha's life, from her childhood to the controversial phases of her career. Other details about the project are still under wraps.

National Award-winning actor Vidya Balan had earlier played Silk Smitha in the Bollywood blockbuster, The Dirty Picture, in 2011. Though the actor's performance received widespread acclaim, the film received criticism from Silk Smitha's close circles, who claimed that the film's depiction of the actor was inaccurate.

Meanwhile, director Pa Ranjith, who is basking in the critical acclaim of Kaala, recently confirmed his Bollywood debut. While an official announcement regarding the cast and crew is awaited, the Hindi film is said to be a period drama. Also, the filmmaker's production house, Neelam Productions, has Maari Selvaraj’s Pariyerum Perumal ready for release.
