AltBalaji's web-series Home explores the housing crisis in Mumbai

AltBalaji's new web-series, Home, is partly inspired by the 2014 Campa Cola Compound case, wherein the Supreme Court ordered the demolition of 35 illegal floors of a house society in Worli, Mumbai. Around 250 families were threatened with eviction and continue to live in legal uncertainty.

Presenting a fictional account of the crisis, Home focuses on the struggles on a nucler family as they standup against both corrupt builders and the chaotic legal system. Directed by Habib Faisal, the show stars Annu Kapoor, Supriya Pilgaonkar, Parikshit Sahni, Amol Parashar, Chetna Pande and others.

"I was returning one night with my dad (Jeetendra) from the Ganpati Festival at Lalgabhcha Raja in Mumbai when he pointed out some buildings and said that they were marked for demolition. He explained to me how the problem of housing is a crisis world over. I was really inspired to explore that," producer Ekta Kapoor said at the trailer launch of Home.

Home marks Habib Faisal's digital debut. The director is known for Bollywood films like Ishaqzaade, Dawaat-e-Ishq and Qaidi Band. "Feature films as a format are shrinking. There's more space to explore complexity and character development through web-series. I have not done anything on Mumbai so far. The housing issue triggers the story of Home, but there's much more happening in the series."

"Web is primarily just sex and violence. Keeping that in mind, it was very brave of Ekta Kapoor to tell a story about a family in a likeable, simple manner. The problem of housing is a collective responsibility. We can't simply blame the politicians or builders for it. Citizens have to come together and solve it," Annu Kapoor said.
