The South Indian Film Artistes Association, popularly known as Nadigar Sangam, joined protests in Chennai today against the Central Government's failure to set up the Cauvery Management Board. While almost the entire Tamil cinema fraternity, including veterans like Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, took part in the silent protest, Silambarasan chose not to participate, and instead voiced his displeasure in a press meet at his T Nagar residence. 

The actor said he doesn't believe in "silent protests". "Silence isn't an option for anything. We need to talk it out. Also, I must confess I wasn't extended an invitation," he added. 

"The entire State has been in chaos ever since (former Chief Minister) J Jayalalithaa passed away. Some issue or the other keeps plaguing Tamil Nadu including GST, jallikattu, Kollywood strike, and now Cauvery and Sterlite issues. There's no permanent solution yet, because none of the political parties want to genuinely help our people. They're simply playing games," he said.

The actor also explained why he chose to move away from Twitter. "Every time I say something, it's being misinterpreted. But I can't dismiss the fact that social media is powerful. In order to show solidarity, I am requesting everyone to post a video of yourself giving a glass of water to a fellow Tamilian on April 11 between 3 and 6 pm with the hashtag 'Unite for humanity'. Let this movement spread across Tamil Nadu."
