The film industry was earlier imposed with a Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 28%. Various film celebrities and personalities had raised their voice as it was deemed to be high, and even stars like Kamal Haasan threatened to quit cinema if no amendments were made by the government. Following this, many requests were placed to reduce the tax rate.

Now, relief has been provided to the cinema industry as the government has brought down the GST from 28% to 18%.

This reduction comes as a much-needed relief which would help the filmmakers make more movies without worrying about their ticket sales being hit.
