One man show

S Subhakeerthana

It's not often that you hear of one person managing all aspects of filmmaking--right from designing costumes, title cards, editing, doubling up as a lightman, stuntman to direction. Raj Kumar of Vengayam fame, a former assistant of Velu Prabhakaran, has single-handedly taken care of every aspect of movie making for his upcoming film One. In fact, he had nobody to assist him on the sets either. "One is a result of four years of hard work. I guess the title is self-explanatory. I wanted to prove that I can do good work without depending on anyone," he tells CE.

But how did he manage to complete the whole film without even an assistant? "The moment I start the film, I place a camera and it records everything. I never sought anybody's help even to move the trolly or place the camera," he smiles.

One revolves around four friends who get stuck in the middle of a forest. "What happens when they find an equipment that can make the world freeze for ten days forms the rest of the story," adds Raj Kumar.

"It's easy to make commercial movies, but pretty hard to make experimental ones," he says, adding that he was depressed during the making of the film due to technical issues. "I wanted to do something on the lines of Cast Away, 127 Hours and Buried. Either I should have the money to make a successful film, or have the idea and guts to tread a different path. I chose the second one and here I am," he signs off.
