25 years of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai: Rare working stills from the iconic film, and the stories behind them

Karan Johar’s romantic classic starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukerji turns 21 this year.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai marked Karan Johar’s directorial debut. The budding filmmaker was torn between two story ideas for his first feature, deciding to blend them into one film.
KKHH was Shah Rukh Khan’s first film with Rani Mukerji. Shah Rukh and Rani would go on to collaborate in Hey Ram,Chalte Chalte, Veer-Zaara, Paheli and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna.
Karan Johar had played a supporting role alongside Shah Rukh Khan in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. It was Shah Rukh who encouraged Karan to become a director.
The iconic railway station scene where Anjali and Rahul part ways has a signage reading ‘Faridabad’. Recently, director Karan Johar confirmed that the film was never shot in Faridabad.
Veteran actor Farida Jalaal played the role of Mrs. Savitha Khanna, Rahul's widowed mother. Her comic scenes with Johnny Lever at the summer camp are a riot.
Kajol was Kjo’s first choice for the character of Anjali. It was Kajol’s idea to include Tina’s death scene in the film.
While shooting for a riding scene in Mauritius, Kajol fell from her bike and was unconscious for a while. When she came to her senses, the only person she could instantly remember was Ajay Devgn.
The exterior portions of the college scenes were filmed at the University of Mauritius, which stood-in for St.Xavier’s College. The rest were filmed inside Mumbai studios.
The song Tum Paas Aaye was filmed at this white cottage overlooking the Buachaille Etive Mor in Scotland.
Choreographer Farah Khan wasn’t kicked about Rani Mukerji’s dancing skills during rehearsals. However, the actor slayed her steps on the days of shoot, leaving everyone impressed.
