Telugu director Tatineni Rama Rao started working on a film titled Khabardar in 1984, which was a social drama centred upon a terminally ill patient and a doctor.

Kamal was to play an Indian martial arts guru.Preproduction work started for 19 steps after Walt Disney Studios came forward to produce the film. 12 days before the film began shoot, Kamal Haasan dropped out and the film was subsequently shelved.In mid-2009, Kamal Haasan wanted to work with Mysskin on a film about Buddha. The team was rumoured to be considering two titles for the film - The Tooth of Buddha and 500 BC.Kamal travelled to the United States to seek out production companies who were willing to fund the big-budget film, but no studio eventually agreed. Mysskin was then forced to drop the project.In late 2012, Hollywood producer Barrie Osborne wanted to make an English film in association with Kamal Haasan, who would direct the project and feature in the lead role.Kamal subsequently announced a project titled Moo in February 2013, to be produced by Osborne. The film was said to be about three lives.A potential English title of Triple Impact was speculated, while other sources titled the film as Yaavarum Kelir, with an English title of All Are Kin. The project later failed to develop.In Nov 2015, Kamal and Malayalam filmmaker T. K. Rajeev Kumar announced that they were working on a family drama script, to be titled Amma Appa Vilayattu in Tamil.After talks with Sridevi failed to materialise, Kamal cast Amala Akkineni and Zarina Wahab and announced that the film would be shot entirely in the US. with schedules in New York and Georgia.Amma Appa Vilayattu was later postponed and by early 2016, Kamal Haasan chose to collaborate with Rajeev Kumar on a different project that he had written himself, Sabaash Naidu.Kamal Haasan developed a Dasavaratham spin-off featuring Balram Naidu, the RAW operative, titled Sabaash Naidu. T. K. Rajeev Kumar was handed directorial duties.Co-produced by Raaj Kamal Films and Lyca Productions, the film was launched in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. Shruti Haasan was selected for a acting role, while Akshara joined the project as an AD.Team Sabaash Naidu commenced the shoot in Los Angeles, California in June 2016. Kamal took over as the director, after Rajjeev Kumar fell sick in the US.In July 2016, Kamal Haasan fractured his leg after falling at his home in Chennai, with the incident leading to an indefinite delay of the project.
