Some stories are connected not by a single protagonist, but by the place where they unfold. Jhumpa Lahiri's Unaccustomed Earth is built around that idea, with its stories exploring the lives of Indian American families, their relationships with home and the tensions that emerge between generations. Bringing that structure to a series, however, required more than simply adapting the individual stories one by one.
For showrunner Madhuri Shekar, the solution was to imagine the characters as people who might actually know one another. The short stories are largely set in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Shekar imagined their characters sitting together at the same Thanksgiving table. She said that once those connections began forming, “this beautiful community just blossomed.”
Netflix has now unveiled the first look of Unaccustomed Earth, its eight-episode adaptation of Lahiri's acclaimed short-story collection, with Freida Pinto and Siddharth in the lead. The series will premiere on December 17 and follows an interconnected Indian American Bengali community in Cambridge and Boston, Massachusetts.
Pinto plays Parul Chaudhury, a wife and mother who had once given up her college romance to honour her father's wishes. Years later, after receiving a cancer diagnosis, she moves with her family from Mumbai to Cambridge, where she had previously lived and studied. Her return brings her face-to-face with Amit Mukherjee, played by Siddharth, the love she had left behind. Their reunion eventually sets off an affair that affects not only their families but the wider community around them.
The adaptation also represents a structural departure from Lahiri's book. Rather than presenting its stories independently, Shekar has woven their characters and events into one narrative, with friendships, marriages and family histories overlapping. The result is a larger ensemble drama in which Parul and Amit's relationship becomes one thread in a much wider portrait of immigrant life.
Siddharth plays Amit, a Bengali American born and raised in Cambridge. Netflix had earlier described him as a warm-hearted man who is dependable when friends need him but struggles to find stability in his professional and personal life. His carefully balanced world begins to unravel when Parul, his long-lost love, returns.
The ensemble includes Indraneil Sengupta as Jai, Parveen Kaur as Nina, Sarayu Blue as Ruma, Justin Bartha as Adam, Adi Roy as Kaushik, Iyla Sundarsingh McKaig as Hema and Jayant Kripalani as Pranab, alongside Ishita Bansal, Meera Simham, Ravi Kapoor, Swayam Bhatia and Palomi Ghosh.
Madhuri Shekar serves as writer and showrunner, while John Wells, Lahiri, Nisha Ganatra, Erica Saleh, Erin Jontow and Celia Costas are among the executive producers. The Namesake filmmaker Ritesh Batra directs and executive produces the first two episodes. The series is produced by Warner Bros Television.
