Stories about ordinary people standing up to entrenched power have long been a part of Tamil cinema, often using village life to examine the relationship between politics, the police and the justice system. Such narratives also offer room for characters who are not conventional action heroes, but find themselves drawn into conflicts much larger than their own lives.

A film built around this conflict can bring together a range of perspectives, from the vulnerability of rural communities to the responsibility of those entrusted with protecting them. The setting becomes particularly significant when the central dispute involves the exploitation of natural resources and the influence wielded by those who profit from it.

Lenin Pandiyan, the rural drama directed by DD Balachandran, began streaming on Amazon Prime Video on October 16. The film is available in Tamil and Telugu, following its theatrical release on September 25. The cast includes Gangai Amaran, Roja, Dhaarshan Ganesan and Shrita Rao, with music composed by Ilaiyaraaja.

The story follows an elderly farmer, Durairasu, played by Gangai Amaran, and a young police constable, Maravarman Sundarapandian, played by Dhaarshan Ganesan. Their lives intersect after a dispute involving a sand-mining operation draws the farmer into a larger conflict. When Durairasu becomes a witness in a case involving the murder of a village administrative officer who had been exposing illegal mining, the constable is tasked with protecting him.

The film marks the acting debut of Dhaarshan, the grandson of veteran actor Sivaji Ganesan. Roja plays Sandhanam, Durairasu’s wife, while Shrita Rao appears as Priya, the constable’s wife. George Maryan, Aadukalam Naren, Yugendran and Bose Venkat are also part of the cast.

Produced by Sathya Jyothi Films, Lenin Pandiyan was written and directed by DD Balachandran, with TG Thyagarajan presenting the film. The technical team includes cinematographer AM Edwin Sakay, editor Nagooran Ramachandran and art director Athuuri Jeykumaar.
