Every year, the festival of Onam results in the release of several big-ticket Malayalam releases and this year is no different. With Prithviraj Sukumaran's Khalifa opening in theatres alongside Girish AD's Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, which stars Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju, Kamal Gianchandani, Chief Business Planning & Strategy, PVR INOX Limited, speaks on the performance on the Onam releases.
“The Onam week has brought a strong slate of Malayalam and Telugu cinema, with films such as Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, Khalifa, and Irumudi witnessing encouraging audience response. These movies are recording occupancy levels of around 60%, reflecting healthy demand for regional content during the festive period," said Kamal.
He added, "What is particularly encouraging is that audiences are rewarding films for the strength of their storytelling and content, irrespective of the language they originate in. The performance of these films reinforces the growing appetite for diverse, content-led regional cinema and its ability to drive strong theatrical engagement.”
Bethlehem Kudumba Unit has crossed Rs 100 crores (gross) after 12 days in theatres. Meanwhile, Khalifa collected Rs 23.27 crores (gross) after 13 days in the theatres.
