Priyadarshan: I told Nagarjuna 'Kalyani can't act' when approached for Hello

The filmmaker recently reminisced about getting a call from Nagarjuna for a role for his daughter in the movie Hello

Recently, we reported about how Kalyani Priyadarshan did not know that her legendary filmmaker father had an Instagram account until he posted an emotional note for Mohanlal's daughter Vismaya's acting debut, Thudakkam. Perhaps, there is an explanation for this, and maybe it lies in some of Priyadarshan's recent statements.

Speaking recently to Pinkvilla, Priyadarshan said that Kalayani and he do not talk about each other's films at home. The filmmaker put this down to the difference in their eras. Pointing at a younger audience in the crowd and referring to Kalyani Priyadarshan, the filmmaker said, "She belongs to this era. And they have their own ray of cinema. And I come from an old school. We discuss everything but cinema."

When asked about his opinion about Kalyani's industry hit Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, Priyadarshan said that it has made him proud as a father and that his daughter "has done a wonderful job" in the movie.

Interestingly, the director also revealed that he never imagined that Kalyani would become an actor, as she "never liked to come to film sets" in her younger days, even while pursuing a degree in architecture. Then, the filmmaker reminisced about getting a phone call from Nagarjuna for a role for Kalyani in his 2017 production, Hello, opposite his son, Akhil Akkineni. "When Nagarjuna called me, I said, 'She can't act'. So she asked me, 'Why can't I try it? Nothing to lose. I will go back to my architecture,'" Priyadarshan recalled while speaking about his daughter's acting debut.

The filmmaker also said that he never spoke to his daughter about her films after her debut. He also addressed Kalyani's early struggles with Malayalam. "She couldn't speak the language Malayalam because she never lived in Kerala. But all these things she learnt," the filmmaker said, noting how today's youngsters, just like Kalyani, would go all out to accomplish what they want when they want it.
