Director Krishand's new sci-fi film Masthishka Maranam opened in theatres last Friday. Starring Rajisha Vijayan in the lead role, the film has been receiving positive responses from critics and audiences alike. However, it is yet to get off the blocks well and truly at the box office.

According to data from the industry tracker Sacnilk, it has minted a little over one crore from theatres in India so far this Sunday. The Masthishka Maranam box office collection saw an improvement on Saturday, jumping from an approximate 40 lakh to 65 lakh, reveals Sacnilk data.

Set in the dystopian Kochi of 2046, Masthishka Maranam follows a father grieving the passing of his daughter who gets into a VR-based memory game in the black market as a coping mechanism. However, in the process, he accidentally discovers a dark piece of information pertaining to a superstar.

The film also stars Divya Prabha, Niranj Maniyanpilla Raju, Vishnu Agasthya, Rahul Rajagopal, Ann Saleem, Santhy Balachandran, Suresh Krishna, and Jagadish, among others.

In our review, Vivek Santhosh wrote, "What this film keeps circling back to, without ever quite landing, is the question of whether anything actually belongs to anyone anymore in a world where the cost of memory itself has a price tag. Masthishka Maranam doesn’t pretend to have any answers. But it asks the question with enough imagination, anger, and humour that you leave feeling glad that it did." The review also noted that the much-discussed special number featuring Rajisha Vijayan "comes with real contextual significance".

The film brought Krishand back to direction after a different eccentric outing, the Sony LIV series The Chronicles of the 4.5 Gang. It brought him back to feature filmmaking after last year's Sangarsha Ghadana - The Art of Warfare.
