Kochi is set to have a dedicated film city. It is one of the moves concerning cinema that is introduced in the revised Kerala budget for the 2026-27 period. The proposed budget for the film city in Kochi is 100 crore, and it is expected to improve the film industry's infrastructure and promote the growth of the entertainment sector. The budget has also outlined plans to set up not just a permanent venue for the IFFK to help streamline this annual festival, but also a cultural park dedicated to MT Vasudevan Nair in Kozhikode. Chief minister VD Satheesan made the announcements earlier this Friday.

The film city in Kochi is set to be established and developed in tribute of filmmaker JC Daniel, the first filmmaker in the state. Some of the prominent names in the industry have welcomed the moves.

Prithviraj Sukumaran shared on Facebook, "The government's promise to establish a film city in Kochi in the name of Shri JC Daniel, who can be called the creator of Malayalam cinema, and to formally recognise cinema as an industry gives me joy, pride and confidence as a person who is closely associated with Celluloid."

It is worth noting that Prithviraj played JC Daniel in 2013's Celluloid, directed by Kamal. Speaking about the other changes in the Kerala budget, the actor-filmmaker added, "Another notable move is the announcement that an anti-piracy cell will be formed. Hopefully, it will be a shield for the film industry. Other prizes given to cinema, including being a permanent venue for the International Film Festival, are also valuable." Prithviraj ended his note by thanking VD Satheesan and the Minister for Culture, Cinema and Tourism, PC Vishnunadh.

On the other hand, Mohanlal shared, "Gladly welcome the government’s decision to promote the film industry, including the proposition for a cultural park, in the new budget. These projects are sure to provide new revival and growth to the film industry. The announcement that steps will be taken to recognise cinema as an industry will give thousands of filmmakers new hopes. Heartfelt thanks to Chief Minister Shri VD Satheesan and Culture Minister Shri PC Vishnunadh."
