Recently, we reported about Mohanlal starring in the lead role in Priyadarshan's 100th film as a director. The filmmaker gave some updates about the project in a recent interview.
Speaking to Mid-Day, the filmmaker said that production on the film will commence in November this year. He added that it will require much time for him to put the film together because of its genre (musical) and its complexity. Describing the film as "a commercial entertainer with action, 12 songs, and a family drama at its heart," Priyadarshan said that its two protagonists are Carnatic singers. He is searching for an actor to play the father's role in the film.
The filmmaker is eyeing a new actor with "a background in Carnatic and Hindustani music and Kathakali" for the said role. Recognising the challenge in finding an actor for it, he said that he would have asked SP Balasubrahmanyam to play it if the legendary singer was still alive.
Priyadarshan added that while Mohanlal is a good singer, he would not ask the superstar to sing in his 100th film because the character has to perform "classical singing on a high octave".
The film is set to be produced by Antony Perumbavoor of Aashirvad Cinemas, Mohanlal's longtime collaborator, and Binu George Alexander is attached to it as a co-producer. The film marks Aashirvad Cinemas's 38th production venture.
It is worth noting that Mohanlal also featured in Priyadarshan's directorial debut from 1984, Poochakkoru Mookkuthi. In a video announcing the project, the filmmaker said that this is the first time in the history of world cinema that the same lead actor from a director's debut stars in his 100th film as well. "This record will never be rewritten," he told Mohanlal, Antony and Binu.
Beyond the upcoming film with Mohanlal, Priyadarshan's upcoming films also include the Oppam remake Haiwaan, starring Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan, and Hera Pheri 3. Notably, Mohanlal has a cameo in Haiwaan.
