Joy Mathew supports Ranjith in sexual harassment case

The actor-filmmaker said that he would hold Ranjith close whether or not the latter is guilty

Recently, we reported about Ranjith being remanded following sexual harassment accusations against him by an actress working on his film. Some prominent voices in Malayalam cinema responded to the filmmaker's arrest. For example, actor Parvathy Thiruvothu recently said that his arrest is unsurprising and that it is for an offence that has been repeated. Meanwhile, writer-director-actor Joy Mathew has come in support of Ranjith.

Speaking to the press and media recently, Joy Mathew said that the truth about the case is not yet known. He added that it is a loophole of the legal system that the allows the arrest of the accused immediately after an allegation and the registration of the complaint.

"The court does not grant us enough time to listen to the accused's version of events," the actor-filmmaker said. He also argued that a case was filed against his director 'friend' PT Kunju Muhammad many days after sexual conduct accusations came against him and a complaint was raised to CM Pinarayi Vijayan.

"This has not been the case in Ranjith's issue. Immediate action has been taken here. It could be to save the face of the ruling government, which is about to fall," the actor argued. He added that the government is known for such ruthless measures and does not hesitate to betray those who stand by them.

The actor also said that he is yet to hear Ranjith's side and that he considers the filmmaker like his brother, whether or not the latter is guilty. "We should not abandon a friend just because they commit a mistake. Parents do not discard some of their children when they go down the wrong path but rather hold them close. Even if he has committed a mistake, I am willing to forgive him and hold him close, unlike those who say that they are with the survivor. Let the court prove whether they have survived the alleged incident," the actor added.

He also noted that he took a different stance in the conspiracy case related to Dileep because the actor is only his industry colleague. "There is a difference between a colleague and a friend," the actor-filmmaker signed off.
