Earlier this Saturday, an Ernakulam magistrate court granted an appeal from the State to keep director Ranjith in police custody for three days after his arrest based on sexual harassment allegations. L Usha, the Judicial First Class Magistrate, granted the application asking for permission to interrogate the filmmaker while in custody. This grant means that he will be in custody until April 06, Monday. The magistrate court also revealed that it would look at the accused's bail application only after custodial interrogation is completed. It has also asked police to present the accused in front of the court when the investigation into the case while he is in custody is over, and then his bail application will be considered.
Ernakulam police filed an FIR against Ranjith based on an actor's complaint where she accused him of trying to assault her sexually in a caravan while they were part of a film production in January.
The law enforcement department proceeded to arrest the filmmaker last Tuesday on the basis of the complaint, and then an Ernakulam magistrate remanded him to judicial custody. The filmmaker complained of discomfort after his arrest, and police took him to a hospital for further medical examination. However, the authorities at the hospital confirmed that he had no major health issues, and he was then remanded to judicial custody. Right now, he is at the Sub Jail in Ernakulam.
Police has booked him under many different Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) provisions, which include non-bailable offences under Section 74 (assault or criminal force to women with intent to outrage her modesty), Section 75 (sexual harassment) and Section 79 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman). The filmmaker has a history of facing sexual harassment allegations prior to the latest one.
