Directorate of Enforcement has conducted raids at the houses of Prithviraj Sukumaran and Amith Chakalakkal as well. Reportedly, the department conducted multiple raids at 17 places, including Mammootty's residence, the property of both Dulquer and his father in Elamkulam, and the actor's Chennai house. They are also conducting raids at the residences of vehicle dealers across five districts in the state. Earlier, the department revealed that they are doing the raids in relation to the ongoing investigation into high-end luxury vehicle smuggling and unauthorised foreign exchange deals.
The raids have taken place based on information about a syndicate that is smuggling luxury cars, such as Land Cruiser and Defender, into India through the Bhutan-Nepal route. Preliminary investigations have found that a racket based out of Coimbatore used forged documents for the cars with fake RTO registrations from states such as Arunachal Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh, and so forth. Then, they sold the vehicles to actors at reduced prices. ED started taking action against the practice as they found it to be in direction violation of sections 3, 4, and 8 of the FEMA act.
