Veteran writer-filmmaker Ranjith is directing a new short film titled Aaro – Someone, starring director Syamaprasad, Manju Warrier, and Azees Nedumangad. It is the maiden short film production from Mammootty Kampany, who back it in association with Ranjith's Capitol Theatre.

The first look of Aaro unveiled on Saturday features Syamaprasad and Manju Warrier, though both their faces remain out of focus. VR Sudheesh has written the story and dialogues for the short, which also has a poem by Kalpatta Narayanan. It has Prasanth Raveendran as the cinematographer, Bijibal handling the background score, and Rathin Radhakrishnan as the editor.

Ranjith hasn't been actively into filmmaking lately. His last feature release was the 2017 film Drama, headlined by Mohanlal. The director has earlier collaborated with Mammootty on many acclaimed works, including Kaiyoppu, Pranchiyettan and the Saint, and Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha. They last teamed up for Kadugannawa: Oru Yathra Kurippu, a short segment in Manorathangal, an anthology based on MT Vasudevan Nair's short stories. Based on MT's memoir, it had Mammootty as a journalist who travels to the town of Kadugannawa, Sri Lanka in search of a girl he knew as a child.

Mammootty Kampany's next feature release will be Kalamkaval, directed by debutant Jithin K Jose. Mammootty and Vinayakan play the lead roles in the film, slated to hit screens on November 27.
