As Sumathi Valavu continues to do well in theatres, a surprise announcement was made on Saturday regarding its sequel. Titled Sumathi Valavu 2: The Origin, the film is expected to trace the origins of the mystery around 'Sumathi Valavu', a haunted place in Kerala, associated with tragic folklore.

The sequel brings back the same team behind the camera, including director Vishnu Sasi Shankar, writer Abhilash Pillai, composer Ranjin Raj, and producers Gokulam Gopalan and Murali Kunnumpurath. Although it is not yet clear if the original cast will be retained, the makers have confirmed that some popular actors from South Indian cinema will be part of it.

Sumathi Valavu, which hit screens on August 1, is enjoying a good run in theatres despite the lukewarm response from critics. According to the makers, the film has already grossed over Rs 20 crores worldwide.

The horror comedy features a huge star cast comprising Arjun Ashokan, Malavika Manoj, Sidharth Bharathan, Gokul Suresh, Balu Varghese, Saiju Kurup, Sshivada, Devanandha, Sreepath Yan, Joohi Jayakumar, Jasnya K Jayadeesh, Gopika Anil and Shravan Mukesh, among others. Actor Bhama, who has been away for a while, also makes a comeback by playing a crucial role in it.
