Alappuzha Gymkhana director Khalid Rahman and Thamaasha filmmaker Ashraf Hamza have been suspended by the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA) following their arrest on charges of possessing hybrid ganja. The move comes amid growing concerns over drug use within the Malayalam film industry. Sibi Malayil, president of FEFKA, confirmed to Onmanorama that both directors would face disciplinary action as part of the federation's efforts to address the issue. Sibi emphasised that the suspension was in response to the rise in drug abuse, and the directors' union has been directed to take appropriate measures.

In response to the arrests, Sibi also mentioned that FEFKA had already taken steps earlier this year to address the issue of drug use on film sets. A seven-member committee had been set up to monitor shooting locations, and earlier this year, a makeup artist caught using drugs was suspended by the relevant union.

The directors were arrested in the early hours of Sunday following a raid by the Excise Department at a flat in Kochi. Also apprehended was Shalif Mohammed, a close associate of Khalid and Ashraf. The authorities seized 1.6 grams of hybrid ganja during the raid, which took place around 2 am at the Purva Grandbay complex near the Goshree Bridge. The flat, reportedly rented by cinematographer Sameer Thahir, had been under surveillance after receiving confidential tips. It was reported that the three individuals were preparing to consume the substance when the raid occurred. Upon questioning, the excise squad confirmed that all three had been regular users of ganja. The excise authorities have registered cases against the trio under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. Despite the small amount of ganja seized, the three individuals were later released on station bail.

Khalid is best known for his popular films such as Anuraga Karikkin Vellam, Unda, and Thallumaala, and his latest outing, Alappuzha Gymkhana. Apart from Thamaasha, Ashraf has also helmed Bheemante Vazhi and Sulaikha Manzil.

The latest incident has prompted further scrutiny and action from FEFKA, which is cooperating fully with law enforcement in the ongoing investigation. The incident follows a similar case involving actor Shine Tom Chacko, who was arrested earlier for attempting to evade a narcotics raid at a hotel.
