On Wednesday, the online social cataloguing platform Letterboxd unveiled its list of the 25 highest-rated horror films of 2024 thus far. Notably, only two Indian films made the cut: the Malayalam film Bramayugam and the Hindi film Stree 2: Sarkate Ka Aatank.
The Mammootty-starrer Bramayugam, written and directed by Rahul Sadasivan, made it to the Top 5 and ranked second on the list. Meanwhile, Amar Kaushik's horror-comedy Stree 2 was placed 23rd, marking it as the only other Indian entry on the list.
Topping the list is The Substance, a satirical body horror film starring Demi Moore. Other notable films featured in the list include Alien: Romulus at 6, Strange Darling at 8, Exhuma at 9, Longlegs at 15, Late Night with the Devil at 16, The First Omen at 18, and A Quiet Place: Day One at 24.
Bramayugam, a psychological folk-horror, features Mammootty as a solitary yet cunning owner of a mysterious and dilapidated mansion. Following its theatrical release, the film received a highly positive reception, reportedly surpassing 60 crores at the global box office, according to the makers. An excerpt from the CE review of the film reads, "For an industry that hardly has a handful of quality horror films, Bramayugam is a much-needed addition."
Stree 2 is the latest instalment in Maddock Films' horror-comedy universe, which also includes titles such as Bhediya and Munjya. According to the makers, the Stree sequel has become the highest-grossing Hindi film of all time, surpassing the record previously held by Jawan (2023).
