Mohanlal has announced the release date of his directorial debut, Barroz, through Fazil, the director of his acting debut Manjil Virinja Pookkal (1980). The 3D fantasy film, also starring Mohanlal in the titular role, will hit theatres on December 25. In a video that Mohanlal shared on social media, Fazil said that the actor-director asked him to disclose the release date of Barroz and that it surprised him because it is coincidentally the same day as Manjil Virinja Pookkal and Manichitrathazhu. Fazil stated that even Mohanlal was not aware of the coincidence.

Barroz’s release has been postponed multiple times, including once before its scheduled October release. Antony Perumbavoor produced the film under the Aashirvad Cinemas banner. It also stars Kallirroi Tziafeta, Ignacio Mateos, and Cesar Lorente Raton. Touted as a 3D fantasy adventure, it is based on Jijo Punnoose's novel Barroz: Guardian of D'Gama's Treasure and has dialogues by Kalavoor Ravikumar.

It has cinematography by Santosh Sivan, sound design by Jonathan Miller, production design by Santhosh Raman, and editing by B Ajithkumar. It has music by Lydian Nadhaswaram, the young pianist to win the American television talent show The World’s Best, and background music by Hollywood composer Mark Kilian. Filmmaker TK Rajeev Kumar served as a creative head for Barroz.
