We had earlier reported that a family from Kottayam district named Kunjaman Illam filed a petition at the Kerala High Court demanding to stop the release of Mammootty's Bramayugam, stating that the makers had used their family name in the film and that the witchcraft portions show them in a bad light.

The plea said, “If the name of the lead character and its traditional home is not changed the same will cause serious prejudice to the petitioner, his family members, ancestors and successors.” It was also argued that the film’s certification should be revoked as it portrayed Mammootty’s character practising black magic.

The family also argued that the presence of a star like Mammootty is too much of a social influence to ignore.

Now, ahead of the release on February 16, the makers have decided to change the name of Mammootty's name in the film. His character name has now been changed from Kunjamon Potti to Kodumon Potti.

Earlier, the makers released the trailer of the film which shows Arjun Ashokan's character trapped in an old-fashioned house, unable to escape. A dialogue said by Arjun's character about the game of dice is being repeated, which might be a hint that he is stuck in a loop, dictated by Mammootty's character, who seems like a ruthless sorcerer of sorts.

According to the makers, Bramayugam is a horror thriller set in the dark ages of Kerala. The film is scripted by Rahul Sadasivan, with dialogues by award-winning novelist TD Ramakrishnan.

Bramayugam is the debut production of Y Not Studios' newly launched banner, Night Shift Studios, which focuses exclusively on horror thrillers. Besides Malayalam, the film is planned to be released simultaneously in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi.
