Facing intense pressure following sexual harassment allegations against key figures in the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), its president, actor Mohanlal, has resigned. The entire executive committee has also been disbanded, throwing the 500-member organisation into turmoil. Those in the executive group included young stars like Tovino Thomas and Unni Mukundan.

The announcement comes in the wake of revelations from the Justice Hema Committee, which exposed widespread harassment and abuse of women within the Malayalam film industry. "Thank you for your criticism and corrections," read a statement from AMMA.

"In light of the Hema Committee's findings on sexual harassment involving certain AMMA office-bearers, the current governing body is stepping down to uphold its moral responsibility. A general meeting will be convened within two months to elect a new governing body," AMMA stated.

Veteran actor Siddique, who served as AMMA’s general secretary, announced his resignation after junior artist Revathy Sampath accused him of sexual assault. Baburaj, the association's joint secretary, also faces allegations of sexual misconduct from another junior artist.

The decision to disband the executive committee comes after an online executive meeting held on Tuesday to discuss Siddique’s resignation. The association expressed hope that the new leadership would be able to restore its credibility.

Notably, the current executive body was elected only two months ago.
Mohanlal had been elected unopposed as AMMA president for the third consecutive term, while actors Jagadish and Jayan Cherthala were elected vice president. Actor Unni Mukundan was appointed AMMA's treasurer. Other members of the executive committee included actors Kalabhavan Shajohn, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Joy Mathew, Suresh Krishna, Tini Tom, Ananya, Vinu Mohan, Tovino, Sarayu Mohan, and Ansiba Hassan.
