The makers of Empuraan, the much-hyped Lucifer sequel, have been involved in extensive pre-production works for the last few months. It included location scouting across various states in India. As per the latest reports, the team has finalised all the locations and will begin production in August. Apart from India, the team will also be shooting in a few other countries. Sujith Vaassudev, who shot Lucifer, has been retained in Empuraan as well.

Lucifer, which marked the directorial debut of Prithviraj Sukumaran, was released in 2019 and emerged as a huge success. The film, scripted by Murali Gopy, had Mohanlal as the lead, while Vivek Oberoi, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas and Indrajith Sukumaran essayed other major roles. Three months after the release, the team announced the sequel Empuraan, which will also be produced by Antony Perumbavoor's Aashirvad Cinemas. More details regarding it are still awaited.
